Our Maundy Thursday Service
Join us for Maundy Thursday service Thursday, April 1 at 7:00 p.m. for a commemoration of the last day of Jesus’ life before events unfolded: his last meal with his disciples, the establishment of communion, the betrayal of Jesus by Judas and the time spent praying in the Garden of Gethsemane while the disciples slept. A common theory of the origin of the word is that Maundy is from Latin mandatum (from which we get our English word mandate), a verb that means “to give,” “to entrust,” or “to order.” It refers to the establishment of communion. The service is a somber occasion in the evening as a preparation for going into Good Friday with a darkened sanctuary representing the humiliation of Jesus and the consequences of sin. The Good News is the celebration of new life and hope that is to come on Resurrection Day. Communion is an important part of the Maundy services.
